There's a lot of preparation that goes in to a trip to Walt Disney World. After you've finished all the booking and itinerary planning (which we can help you with!), then comes some of my favorite parts of the pre-trip activities! When your trip is coming up and you're itching to prepare, here are some things you need to do.
Attach your Magical Express tags
The Magical Express service itself operates from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and can be found on Level 1 of the B-side baggage claim. This service will take you to your Disney resort hotel with just a tap of your magic band!
When booking your resort, your agent can add your flight information to you reservation, and you will receive yellow luggage tags in the mail for Disney's Magical Express. If you do not want to have to retrieve any checked luggage from the carousel after de-boarding, these yellow tags will allow Disney to get your bags for you and deliver them to your resort room later that day. If you would rather handle your bags yourself, or if you need access to your luggage quickly upon arrival to your resort (it usually takes about 3 hours for your bags to magically appear in your room), you can pick your bags up yourself and bring them with you as you board the Magical Express.
Get that Magic Band Ready
If you're staying at a Walt Disney World resort, you'll receive a magic band for each person on the reservation. You will need to customize these bands in My Disney Experience at least 10 days before your resort arrival date if you want to choose your colors and add your name to the back! If you customize them earlier, they will typically ship 30 days before your arrival. Getting your box of magic bands in the mail a few weeks before you depart is a great way to get excited for your trip!
Once you have received your bands, you'll want to make sure to pack them in your carry-on bag so they're easily accessible when you arrive at the Magical Express check-in desk and need to scan! We like to decorate our bands with nail polish or vinyl stickers--there are all kinds of templates and ideas online if you do a little searching!
Prep your supplies
One of my most important tasks before I leave for a trip is to switch my daily phone case to my case with a wrist strap. You can find a version that allows you to use your normal case here. This is a life-saver for me, because it allows me to take photos and not worry about dropping my phone while I'm walking, on rides, and generally not paying attention to my surroundings.
I also make sure to pack our park bag, get some new ponchos, and plug in our external charger so it's ready to go! If you need help with what to pack in your park bag, you can see this post and this one.
Get some new gear
I always buy at least one new Disney-themed shirt before a trip, which means I've managed to work up quite the collection so far. Your local Disney store will have some good options, along with other fan stores like Lunchbox or Hot Topic, but Etsy will have all kinds of options, including many that have a little more subtle designs, like this Main Street shirt from It's a Magical Adventure.
Etsy is also a great place to find other accessories too, like Disney-themed necklaces, earrings, and nail stickers. My go-to accessories are my bangles from Lillian & Co. and this Mickey Apple watch cover from Amazon. Make sure you order with plenty of time for your trip! Some Etsy products can take 30 days or more to arrive.
One of the best ways to prepare for your trip is to do a little reading up on the parts of your trip you're most excited about! Do some browsing on Walt Disney World's Instagram page, check out the menus for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, or read some reviews on your resort (like one of these!). Imagining all the fun you're going to have is a great way to adopt a magical mindset!
