In a somewhat surprising move, Disney announced on February 9th that Wishes! Nighttime Spectacular will be replaced with a new show starting May 12th, 2017. The new show, Happily Ever After Nighttime Spectacular, will feature Disney characters' adventures in Zootopia, Brave, The Princess & The Frog, Moana, and more. It will include new fireworks technology and more use of projections similar to those used in the Once Upon A Time Castle Projection Show that can usually be seen 30 minutes before the start of the fireworks. Happily Ever After will feature original animation as well as an original score, which will have a lot to live up to.
On March 23rd, Disney Parks Blog posted a sneak peek at theme song that will be used with the show, and it sounds magical! Check it out:
The new theme seems as goosebump-worthy as the Wishes! theme to me, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the show in its entirety a few weeks after it debuts!
Disney will continue to offer the Tomorrowland Terrace Fireworks Dessert Party when the new show debuts. This experience offers what Disney considers "prime" viewing of the show, although depending on how many people have booked it and how much you intend to shoulder-shrug people out of the way, you may still have a somewhat obstructed view. The party also offers a wide variety of desserts and beverages to enjoy, which could be a great dinner substitute if you're on the Disney diet. The cost is $79 per adult and $47 per child.
Wishes! Nighttime Spectacular debut in 2003, and it has garnered much support from adoring fans throughout the years. The Wishes! score never fails to transport me directly back to the spot on Main Street where I stood when I saw Wishes! for the first time, and I will definitely miss it. There are already a lot of mixed reactions to this news, just as there is any time Disney replaces something so beloved, but a fourteen year run is impressive, and we feel it is time to move on to something new. If Wishes! is dear to you and you need to relieve some of your heartache, here you go:
I'm looking forward to experiencing Happily Ever After on my next visit in June and will be sharing my thoughts on whether or not it lives up to Wishes!
